A Nervous-System-Aware Approach to Social Emotional Learning

Thursday, November 5, 2026
4:00 pm5:30 pm

Social-emotional skills are most accessible when people feel supported, connected, and regulated. In practice, stress, trauma activation, neurodivergence, and nervous-system overload can affect attention, flexibility, communication, emotional regulation, and connection. This practical, trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming training reframes behavior through a nervous-system-aware lens and explores how protective responses may appear in children, youth, caregivers, and professionals. Participants will learn accessible strategies for supporting regulation and connection before expecting higher-level social-emotional skills, and will identify practical ways to integrate these approaches into family-strengthening, behavioral health, educational, probation, and community-based settings.

Learners will be able to:

Identify three reasons children, youth, families, or professionals may have difficulty accessing social and emotional skills during stress, trauma activation, or nervous-system overload.
Distinguish four protective nervous-system responses that may show up as behavior in children, youth, caregivers, or professionals.
Apply three trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming strategies that support emotional regulation, connection, and skill-building.
Plan one practical implementation step to integrate nervous-system-aware SEL into a professional role, team practice, or family-support setting.
